NEW publication in Fuel
In this work, our Team comprehensively investigated and compared three standardised methods widely used in refinery laboratories for olefins determination (FIA – ASTM D1319, Bromine number – ASTM D1159, and Iodine value (IV) – EN 14111). We benchmarked the results against those obtained using the recently developed GC × GC-FID method, which relies on the selective adsorption of olefins over Ag-SiO2. We extensively validated the methods using model compounds typical of PPOs and model samples with known olefin concentrations. This knowledge has enhanced our understanding of the limitations of the methods studied for analyzing real samples.
Three alternatives to the IV method were tested, and the one utilizing a mercury (II) acetate catalyst proved to be the most accurate among all tested methods, providing the results in the shortest time (10 min). By combining this IV method with a straightforward preparation step to eliminate interferences, reliable information about olefin content in polyolefin-rich pyrolysis oils can be obtained.
