Miloš in Aarhus

On February 9-12th, 2026, Miloš travelled to Aarhus (Denmark) to visit our collaborator, Prof. Patrick Biller and his Team. Patrick's team is working on hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of wet biomass to convert it into so-called biocrude, a dark, viscous oil suitable for producing advanced fuels. We have already realized several hydrotreating experiments with biocrudes of different origins (e.g., manure, straw, m+s blend, sewage sludge, spent textile waste) as part of our collaboration. We have published two joint articles on this topic; see the publication section.

In February, I had the chance to see Patrick's team's facilities for the first time, including the campus in Aarhus and the campus in Viborg, where all pilot plants are located. This travel was undertaken as part of the preparation for the Horizon project and was supported by UCT Prague. During this trip, I had the chance to see the TRL8 HTL at Circlia Nordic, which can process 25 kt (dry feedstock)/year.

Besides the excursion to the lab, I gave a presentation to Patrick's team to introduce our team's research activities, our reactor and analytical facility, and the results we have achieved over the last 10 years. We had a chance to discuss the problems we are facing and the possibilities for future collaboration beyond the prepared proposal.

It was cool to have the chance to visit Aarhus and see the advanced flow HTL setups for the first time.

I am looking forward to our collaboration!
