Summary:
The current trend in GC-MS analysis involves substituting Helium carrier gas with Hydrogen to make the operationmore sustainable and cost-effective. However, limited interest was dedicated to two-dimensional GC (GC×GC),whose operation and optimization are far more complicated, especially when equipped with more sustainable,consumables-free flow modulators. Our project focuses on the issue of Helium substitution by Hydrogen for GC×GCas part of its transition to even more sustainable operation. The project findings will result in a step-by-step tutorialfor switching any flow-modulated GC×GC method to Hydrogen, including optimizing the FID settings to reachcomparable sensitivity.

The project aims to develop a technological chain to produce alkylbenzene sulfonates from waste polyethylene, thereby increasing plastics' recycling share and contributing to the circular economy. The sub-goals are as follows: -Select the plastic feedstock and optimize pyrolysis oil (PO) production. -Develop a heterogeneous catalyst and optimize the continuous alkylation of benzene by olefins originating from PO. Suppress side reactions and catalyst deactivation and achieve maximal conversion at the mildest conditions. -Optimize the composition and separation of alkylbenzenes, subsequent sulfonation, and neutralization to maximize the product's market application. -Techno-economic analysis of the developed production chain and comparison with current production from fossil feeds.

The main objective of the project is to develop a technology chain for the chemical recycling of reject from mixed waste plastics. The key processes for the treatment of the rejects in the proposed project will be pyrolysis fractionation to obtain pyrolysis oil with optimised composition and in maximum yield, hydrotreating (hydrotreating, hydrocracking) of the pyrolysis oil and finally fractionation of the hydrotreated pyrolysis oil on an ethylene unit, a key technology of the petrochemical industry (steam cracking process). The output of the entire processing chain will be mainly ethylene, propylene and basic aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylenes) - key raw materials for the production of new polymers, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
